Lately, I’ve been researching and testing new drumsticks. Personally, I feel like my grip and playing style has changed over the past couple years. Furthermore, I’m always looking for new sticks for different sounds on the kit, especially important for studio work. That being said, I’ve tried numerous stick brands and models lately and have become pleasantly surprised and very happy with my latest find:
“The Bulb” TX526W Autograph Series by Pro-Mark.
The Pros
First off, these sticks were developed in conjunction with drummer, educator and producer Billy Ward. The bulb model is modeled after the “classic” hickory 5A in terms of it’s length, diameter and wood choice, which is a great starting point. The tip is a barrel shape wood tip which has fantastic cymbal response, especially on hats and ride. What REALLY blew me away is this “magical” bulb (as Billy calls it) that is strategically placed around the butt end of the stick.
The beautiful thing about this bulb design is the ergonomics, comfort and pure control that it gave my playing. No matter the genre, this stick has allowed me to play with a more relaxed grip. The relaxed grip, in turn, allows me to have more control, bounce and feel around the kit. It’s like it gives me a piece of mind as I always know where the bulb is. This allows the stick to not go flying out your hands while still keeping a nice loose grip.
One Minor Complaint
With any gear review, there’s at least something that could be improved. For me, the only thing that I wish Pro-Mark would have produced with this stick is a model with nylon tips. I love the wood tips, but could use the nylon as an option in the studio for more cymbal attack.
All I can say is you’ve gotta try these out for yourself. If you can’t locate these sticks in your local drum shop or music store, you can also buy these online from one of my favorite online drum shops: Memphis Drum Shop.
